Why Material Grades Matter inEngineering Plastic Pricing

Two suppliers can quote the same engineering plastic — and still be offering very different value.

This is something buyers should understand before comparing prices.

Take POM, Nylon, PEEK, or PPS as examples.

The material name may be the same.

But the grade may not be.

And that difference can affect:

• Mechanical performance
• Dimensional stability
• Machining behavior
• Surface quality
• Heat resistance
• Wear resistance
• Batch-to-batch consistency
• Service life of the finished part

So when one quotation is much cheaper than another, the first question should not always be:

“Why is your price higher?”

A better question is:

“Are we comparing the same grade and the same performance level?”

In real business, we often see buyers compare quotations based only on:

Material + size + quantity.

But for engineering plastics, that is sometimes not enough.

For example, two POM rods may look almost identical.

But if one material machines more consistently, holds tighter dimensions, and performs more reliably in the final application, the real cost difference may be very different from what you see on the quotation.

After more than 20 years in the plastics industry, one thing I always recommend is:

Before comparing price, confirm the specification first.

Ask about:

• Material grade
• Raw material specification
• Required properties
• Application conditions
• Quality consistency
• Available technical documentation

Price matters.

Of course it does.

But a meaningful price comparison only starts when you know you are comparing the same thing.

Do you normally compare suppliers by material name first, or by grade and application requirements?
